Purpose
To execute the site or Regional safety goals and support Corporate safety initiatives. The Safety Specialist will interface with Human Resources, Operations and Environmental departments in the company.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Conduct periodic site visits to monitor and assess the execution of the safety policies.
Hazards of the workplace are identified, analyzed and controlled.
Oversees safety behavioral audits and analyze statistics for audits.
Incorporates new OSHA/MSHA/DOT/Coast Guard regulations into the safety process and provide this information to managers and employees.
Organizes and leads in operational training meetings with staff.
Provide suggestions on how to make the workplace a safe working environment.
Initiates and promotes day to day safety policies to stimulate interest in safety to operations employees.
Actively represents the organization in community, industry associations, safety groups and programs.
Measures the effectiveness of the safety policy and provide consistency among the different divisions.
Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years related experience as a safety professional in a major corporation
Bachelors of Science degree in safety or related industrial field
Demonstrated experience in: MUTCD standards of the US Department of Transportation OSHA standards sections 1910 and 1926 FMCSA Motor Carrier Safety Regulation, US DOT Advanced OSHA certification in construction preferred CSP certification preferred
Accident investigation and root cause analysis procedures
The successful candidate should have:
Extensive experience in work zone safety management
Experience with OSHA standards 1910 and 1926
Comprehensive experience in managing the full spectrum of loss associated with heavy construction,
Accident investigation and documentation
Managing and controlling major loss events.
Implementing employee training and safety awareness programs
Developing intervention programs and campaigns
Forecasting loss and cost/quality of intervention efforts
Ability to work erratic shifts and effectively interface with 200+ member workforce
Demonstrated management capability and experience.
Ability to travel 30 to 60%
Some previous experience in the construction industry beneficial
