Job Description

The Maintenance Supervisor is a Maintenance of Way Department position of the Texas & Northern Railway Company of Transtar, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of[C] U. S. Steel[/C] . The Maintenance Supervisor - Maintenance of Way is responsible for directing track and structures inspection, planning, maintenance and construction in the field within prescribed budget and in compliance with applicable laws, including FRA, OSHA, PUC, EPA regulations, and AREMA recommendations. Directs environmental activities for T & N. Provides technical assistance and support for safe day-to-day operations of the departments.

Job Responsibilities:

Administers Company safety programs for all employees under jurisdiction. Recommends safety-related improvements and work-related improvements in work practices or equipment to Superintendent Operations. Performs Safety Conversations and departmental safety meetings as appropriate. Investigates and documents all safety-related incidents under jurisdiction.
Manages and directs efficient operation of day-to-day maintenance and construction activities in his area.
Performs inspection and maintenance planning for all bridges, culverts, buildings, scales and other fixed facilities, as well as track inspections, in compliance with FRA, PUC, and OSHA regulations.
Studies and prepares recommendations to Superintendent Operations for new equipment and improved methods.
Develops and submits annually to Superintendent Operations one-year and five-year maintenance and replacement schedules for Track and Structures facilities and equipment.
Investigates and reports on causes of irregularities and failures of track and facilities; directs necessary repairs.
Develops and directs training of Maintenance of Way employees in the areas of safety, inspection, and orientation of new employees.
Performs some design. Prepares material lists, cost estimates, sketches, drawings, and schematic diagrams for proposed projects.
Keeps Superintendent Operations advised of all significant developments and activities in department.
Accompanies government representatives on inspections and investigations.
Assist in maintaining inventory required to provide continuous operation of track and structures. Orders material needed in advance for maintenance and construction projects.
Provides coordination of repairs and projects with other departments.
Makes recommendations to continuously improve customer service.
Participates in Maintenance of Way “On-Call” assignments.
Performs inspection and emergency and routine cleanup or disposal of environmental contamination.
Supervises hourly employees, supervises and inspects work of contractors and any personnel assigned to conduct bridge inspection.

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent GED) is required.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Civil Engineering preferred.
Valid driver's license required.
Minimum of 5 years railroad track maintenance experience required.
Supervisory experience in Maintenance of Way preferred.
Working knowledge of railroad facilities and equipment required.
Working knowledge of FRA standards and requirements including required Track inspections and repairs.
Computer proficiency required (MS Office Software).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be willing and available to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to accomplish job requirements.
Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
