The Taloyoak Housing Authority (THA) is responsible for the care of over 200 public housing and staff housing units.

About Taloyoak, NU

Located west of the Boothia Peninsula, Taloyoak is at the heart of the Northwest Passage. Formerly known as Spence Bay, the area has a long history of exploration, including the famed John Ross expeditions in the 1830s’ that resulted in the pinpointing of the Magnetic North Pole.

Artists, carvers and artisans are prolific in the area. About the Opportunity

The Taloyoak Housing Authority (THA) is seeking an experienced individual for the role of Maintenance Oil Burner Mechanic in Taloyoak, NU.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager/Foreman, you will inspect, service and repair oil fired heating systems and solid fuel heating systems in all Local Housing Organization (LHO) buildings to ensure safe and efficient operation. You will also maintain domestic and industrial appliances and complete records for all maintenance and repairs.

More specifically, you will:

Regularly clean and overhaul all oil-burner and related equipment (fuel pumps, blowers, vents, duct work, etc.) on a regular basis;
Test all overhauled and re-built oil-burners to ensure units are safe and in good working order;
Install new equipment when required;
Conduct regular checks of all oil-burners;
Diagnose faults in oil burners and identifying repairs required to correct deficiencies;
identify inefficient systems and recommend replacements or upgrades;
Identify deficiencies and repair chimneys and fireboxes;
Examine and test appliances to identify deficiencies and determining repairs;
Repair appliances and re-building components for re-use;
Test repaired and re-built units to ensure they are in good working order;
Identify supplies required and compile materials lists, work orders and inventory;
Provide advice to other tradesmen and assist in emergency situations;
Supervise and train apprentices and casual staff;
Ensure new apprentices, casuals and students receive safety orientation; and
Respond to afterhours service and emergency calls on a rotational basis (standby).

This is an excellent opportunity for a strong problem solver who has Red Seal Interprovincial Journeyman Status in the Oil Burner Trade. At least 5 years of experience at the Journeyman level is essential. Knowledge of the latest B-139 Code and HVAC is required.

You are able to manage your time effectively and you have ability to prioritize tasks on a needs basis while meeting tight deadlines. Strong communication skills are essential as you will be communicating on a regular basis with coworkers inculding students and apprentices.

The ability to communicate well with coworkers will be required in order to easily explain processes to students and apprentices.
